About Us

We are a youth wrestling club located in Woodbury, MN that is part of the Woodbury Athletic Association (WAA).  The WAA wrestling team participates in a number of individual and team tournaments during the season.

1.   Provide a positive, fun-filled experience;
2.   Teach the participants the skills, rules, strategy and discipline of wrestling and encourage good sportsmanship, self-confidence and physical fitness;
3.   Promote healthy and safe physical activity for all participants;
4.   Build character by offering a positive experience, regardless of individual ability, stressing skill development and a positive attitude regardless of winning or losing;
5.   Assist wrestlers in developing a reaching personal a goal. Every wrestler may have a different goal - for some it is to win a national championship and for others it may be to come to practice. Regardless, of the goal - we will work to help them achieve it.

As Adults, We Play an Important Role
As adults we must always keeping in mind, regardless of the situation - that this is ALL ABOUT THE KIDS.   Not just a single kid, not your kid, my kid, or a small group of kids – it is about every single kid in the program… regardless of ability, athleticism, skills, physical attributes, age, sex, race or any other factor.    We as adults must always conduct ourselves in a professional and (proper) adult-like manner. Our expectations, attitudes, opinions and all other perceptions must remain in perspective because we are dealing with young kids.

Comparing Programs
There are hundreds of youth wrestling programs throughout Minnesota. There are some that focus on teaching while others have a greater focus on winning. If you investigate, WAA Youth Wrestling is very much on the same track as most of the other youth wrestling programs that are truly created for teaching the sport and it’s fundamentals and keeping the focus on growing the kids and growing the NUMBER of kids who participate, rather than try to develop youth wrestling champions. Every wrestler who participates to the best of their ability is a winner.

There is a thread of consistency throughout ALL good developmental youth wrestling programs is that everything has been developed with only one focus in mind… THE KIDS! When you ever run into an instance where there is an issue (on or off the mat) most often than not it is because an ADULT has veered away from these principles.

When in doubt – re-read this introduction. If you can honestly say that your decision, intent, methods and motivation are unequivocally inline with either set of these principles – then you are doing what is best for the kids and the program.

      As a program, we do not set a goal to have a wrestling room full of state champions. We do not create heroes or failures among participants who are too young to handle either role. We exist to benefit all wrestlers, NOT for the benefit of a select group of kids or a select group of adults.
