2023 Highlights

2024 Traveling Softball Details

The Woodbury Athletic Association Traveling Softball program provides girls the opportunity to play softball at a more competitive level.

Goals Of The Program:

  1. Have Fun
  2. Learn The Game Of Softball
  3. Improve Softball Skills
  4. Learn To Be A Part Of A Team
  5. Good Sportsmanship

Who Can Play WAA Woodbury Fastpitch?

Girls who are between the ages of 8 to 18 & attend a school in Woodbury or live in the City of Woodbury.

A player from another community will be able to play for WAA Woodbury if she receives a waiver from her current association. This exception must be communicated and agreed upon by both associations.  Age groups 14U, 16U & 18U do not require a waiver as those age groups are considered open.

Minnesota Softball is changing their age rules for the 2024 season. The previous age rules used December 31st as the cutoff, but is changing to August 31st.  This will now align teams with their natural school grade, rather than a birth year.

  • The age of the player on August 31st, 2023 is their playing age for the 2024 season.
  • For questions regarding age rules, please see the 2024 Age Eligibility Calculator
    • https://mnsoftball.com/pages/cms/age-calculator
    • Type in a birthdate and it will tell you what age division the player is eligible to play.
    • You will see odd number ages like 11U. Since we all know that an 11U cannot play 10U, they would play 12U.

Age Groups Are Classified As

  • 8U – birthday from 9/1/2014 to 8/31/2016 - New offering for WAA in 2024
  • 10U - birthday from 9/1/2012 to 8/31/2014
  • 12U - birthday from 9/1/2010 to 8/31/2012
  • 14U - birthday from 9/1/2008 to 8/31/2010
  • 16U - birthday from 9/1/2006 to 8/31/2008

  • 18U - birthday from 9/1/2004 to 8/31/2006

Tryouts

Tryouts will be held at Ojibway Park on Saturday, September 9th. We will have a practice tryout event on Friday, September 8th.

Our goal is to provide a tryout environment that is fair to all players and allows them to demonstrate their abilities to a group of neutral parities. The tryout drills are predetermined and are intended to demonstrate specific skills for the evaluators on a point scale.

Upon signing in at her age appropriate time, each girl will be assigned a number. She will then go into the complex to be evaluated.  Parents are not allowed inside the complex during the evaluation process. All evaluations are recorded based on the numbers assigned at check-in. Each girl will be evaluated in the following general skill areas: Infield, Outfield, Throwing, Catching & Hitting. Girls will have the option to tryout for pitcher & catcher positions upon completion of the general stations. The girls (based on the numbers assigned at the beginning of the process) are ranked based on their evaluations.

Royals Elite Program

The Royals Elite program is being created for Woodbury community players who desire to compete at the highest level. Teams will be formed in the fall, train together in the fall and winter, and will have a paid coach at the 14U and 16U levels for the Elite teams.

During registration there will be questions regarding desire to be considered for one of the elite program teams.

Age Eligibility for Tryouts

16U – birth date years between 2006-2008

14U – birth date years between 2008-2010

12U – birth date years between 2010-2012 (girls with 2012 birth year will need to try out at 10U and 12U the day of tryouts if they want to try for the Elite team)

10U – birth date years between 2012-2014

Tryouts and Team Selection

Initial tryouts will happen on 9/9/23 and will be conducted similar to years past by an independent evaluator. The top 18 scores along with prior coach evaluations (where applicable) will receive a call back for a 2nd day of tryouts where we will be conducting scrimmages for further evaluation with our paid coaches present.

Tryouts will be completed with your regular age group, regardless of desired team. For example: a 12u player birth year 2010 may indicate desire to be considered for the 14u elite team. This player will still complete tryouts with the 12u group, not 14u.

Only exception, 10u players indicating desire to be considered for the 12u elite team will only tryout for 12u.

Teams will be selected after assessments and coach discussions have been made.  Players will be notified and will have 24 hours to accept placement on each team.

Each Elite team will consist of 10 or more players (Minimum of 7 WAA eligible players)

Commitment

By accepting a roster spot on this team, you will be expected to make this your first priority in regards to sports participation. You will be expected to attend all scheduled practices and games during the regular season (May – August). You will be expected to attend all winter games and practices that do not conflict with a winter sport that you may be playing. As is always the case, participation with, Family, School and Religious commitments take priority and can be worked out with your coach.

The commitment from players in the off season is dependent upon availability with any conflicting sports. We encourage our girls to participate in multiple sports/athletics. We do not encourage specialization of a sport. We believe in developing well-rounded athletes. Off season practices will be flexible to schedules as best as possible. We will have multiple opportunities for players to get their practice time in outside of their seasonal sport schedule.
